A lined trench coat being modeled in Eastern Germany, 1953. Invention of the trench coat is claimed by both Burberry and aquascutum, with aquascutum's claim dating back to the 1850s. Using his own designs for the War Officers' coats made 13 years beforehand for the war office, Burberry added shoulder straps and metal rings to his gabardine coat, and the trench coat was born.
